The 1920s, Gonâve, a small Haitian island in the Caribbean Sea. The invasion of colonial investment is progressing. A former miner of Polish descent - Faustin Wirkus - the administrator of the island, befriends its inhabitants. Named king by the local community, he tries to help the island.
