In September 1780, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote the poem “Over all the hilltops is quiet now” on the timber wall of a hunting lodge on Kickelhahn mountain in the Thuringian Forest. Already in Goethe’s lifetime, these verses had been set to music by all kinds of composers.
