In early 1980s East Berlin, painter Heiko Zolchow and actor Dirk Nawrocki fall in love. Seeking freedom, they leave the GDR for West Berlin in 1984. There, they immerse themselves in the theater scene and nightlife, forming a romantic trio with a student named Nikolaus.
