On April 12, 1927, Chiang Kai-shek launched the April 12 Counter-Revolutionary Coup in Shanghai, carrying out a brutal massacre of Communist Party members and revolutionary masses, which led to the collapse of the First United Front between the Kuomintang and the Communists.
