"Curtain Reading" (pardeh khani) is a dying traditional Iranian art form and the antecedent of Ta'zieh. Traveling performers would mount murals depicting scenes from the Shahnameh, and later, religious scenes, while theatrically recounting the stories. Today, very few readers remain.
