In 1937 Hollywood, farm girl Esther Blodgett waits tables at a studio party where she catches the eye of her idol, faded leading man Norman Maine. Sent for a screen test, she is reborn as stardom's new face Vicki Lester, eventually marrying Norman as his career crumbles under the weight of chronic alcoholism.
